Motorola eyes no.3 spot in Indian smartphones market by 2026

Electronics devices maker Motorola has said that with the favourable policies like production linked incentive (PLI) scheme and the latest Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS), it expects to grow its exports more in the coming years, similar to what it is selling in the domestic market too.

The company has around 6 per cent of market share in the Indian smartphones market and aims to be number three player by next year, for which it has to achieve 11-12 per cent by then.

“We will continue to build the way Motorola smartphones today is growing in India…for three years in a row, back to back, we have triple digit growth. For three years, we’ve actually tripled. So eight quarters back, IDC (report) had put us at about a 2.5 per cent share, last quarter, we were at a 7.8 per cent. So the way the domestic is ramping up, obviously, we need to keep adding capacity to keep building momentum,” TM Narasimhan, Managing Director, Mobile Business Group-India, Motorola, told businessline.

Declining to comment on exact numbers, he said that 100 per cent of smartphones that it was selling in India are definitely consumed within the country, and same products are exported too.

Narasimhan said Dixon is one of its biggest partners with whom it was expanding capacities for the last six years. He added that with the schemes like ECMS, Motorola would also look for more partnerships on components as well.

According to International Data Corporation’s (IDC) report, India’s smartphone market grew 4 per cent year-over-year (YoY) in 2024, with shipments reaching 151 million units. Vivo was at number one position with 16.6 per cent market share, followed by Samsung at 13.2 per cent, followed by Oppo and Xiaomi at 12 per cent each. Motorola was at seventh position after Realme (11 per cent) and Apple (8.2 per cent).

Meanwhile, Motorola has also entered the personal computer (PC) segment in India with the launch of Moto Book 60, its first laptop, and Moto Pad 60 Pro, a tablet PC, targetting at the youths. The Moto Book comes in three variants priced between Rs.66,990 and Rs.78,990, while Moto Pad is priced at Rs. 26,999 (8 GB+128 GB) and Rs.28,999 (12 GB+256 GB).

“This is a global first, wherein we have unveiled the Moto Book and the Moto Pad, and actually being globally launched first in India and India is a testbed. Depending on the success here, then the strategy will get built up. So we felt, since we had reached this scale, we felt there was an opportunity for us to take this and built it,” Narasimhan said.

Depending on the success of the products, the company would look at manufacturing here in India and also export to other countries at a later stage.

“We are one of the top 10 supply chain companies globally…we have got manufacturing across countries, and Lenovo (parent company) is the number one PC maker. We have our factory in Pondicherry, so it’s a question on the scale and the volume that this product brings in, the decision will be taken accordingly,” he said.

Narasimhan added that nothing can be finalised right now on whether to manufacture these products at Lenovo factory only, or find another partner to manufacture.
