Minors at time of Godhra train burning, 3 sent to remand home after 23 years | Ahmedabad News

Around 23 years after the Godhra train burning, a Juvenile Justice Board in Gujarat’s Panchmahal district on Tuesday sentenced three individuals, who were minors at that time, to a three-year stay in a remand home for their involvement in the arson that killed 59 karsevaks and triggered communal riots in the state.

JJB chairman K S Modi sentenced the three — now in their 40s — to three years in a juvenile remand home and also slapped a fine of Rs 10,000 each on them.

Advocate H K Soni, who jointly represented the accused with lawyer Salman Charkha, told The Indian Express, “Two persons charged in the case were acquitted while the JJB found three persons guilty. All three men are nearly 40 years of age and have families and children. The JJB has suspended the sentence for 30 days to permit filing of appeal against the order in a higher court. We will move a petition accordingly.”

The three persons were released on a bail surety on Tuesday, to allow them recourse to further legal remedy.
