Do you remember when Microsoft previewed a feature that was basically a living, breathing red flag? It’s called Windows Recall, and the feature itself has been recalled, as Microsoft worked out some troubling kinks. Well, that wasn’t the end of the road, as Microsoft has officially launched Recall on Copilot+ PCs.
If you don’t know what this feature is, here’s a refresher. Last year, Microsoft announced a feature that made everyone just a bit frightened about the company’s AI. Windows Recall is a feature that takes snapshots of most tasks you do on your computer and stores information about them. This is so that you can recall what you were doing at a certain point.
For example, if you save a file in a specific folder, but you forget where you put it, you’d summon Copilot and ask it about that file. It should be able to recall where you put that file because it will be able to access the data from that snapshot.
It’s a handy feature to have, as it could be extremely useful. People forget stuff they do on their computers all the time. However, the fact that a big company wanted permission to extract information on almost everything you do on your computer would scare anyone. In Microsoft’s defense, the company doesn’t send the data to the cloud. It saves all of it locally on your computer, but this information was relatively easy to access.
Microsoft has finally launched Recall for Copilot+ PCs
The company worked hard on securing this feature, and it feels that it’s finally ready for prime time. It’s finally taking it out of its testing phase. Microsoft originally planned to launch it during June of last year, but the immediate backlash caused the company to backpedal.
Now, nearly a year later, Microsoft has officially launched Windows Recall to the public. It’s not available on all computers, however. It’s only coming to Copilot+ PCs. So, if you had a computer before Microsoft announced Copilot+ PCs, then it might not be available to you.
Just like before, Recall will take snapshots of what you’re doing on your computer. While that’s the case, Microsoft made it so that your data is encrypted when it’s saved. Also, the feature won’t save sensitive information like passwords. The thing is that it’s not 100% accurate when it’s blocking sensitive information. There’s still the chance that it will save some passwords.
If you’re still not sold on the feature, don’t worry. Windows Recall will only function if you opt in to it.
