Days after England batsman Harry Brook was banned for two years from competing in IPL due to him pulling out of this year’s IPL, former England captain Michael Vaughan has backed BCCI for the action. Brook, who was picked up for Rs 6.25 crore by Delhi Capitals in the IPL mega auction last year, pulled back from this year’s IPL citing England duty. Vaughan also believes that Brook will become the England white-ball captain in the coming days.
“I think they are right. You put yourself forward. The rules were the rules. They announced them at the end of last year’s IPL. Put yourself into the auction, you say yes, and then you pull yourself out for nothing. He’s not injured, he just had a feeling that he just didn’t want to get over there to play in the IPL. He’s going to stay in the UK. I get a feeling he’s probably going to be the white-ball captain for England down the line, so he just wants to focus his attention on England, which all the England fans would be happy with, but I think the IPL had to bring something in because it does derail the franchises in the piece. I don’t think he’s been replaced yet,” Vaughan said on the YouTube podcast Club Prairie Fire.
Brook, who has played in 24 Tests, 26 ODIs and 44 T20Is for England, was supposed to play in IPL for the first time this year. But the 26-year-old England batsman pulled out of the IPL citing England duty in the upcoming series later this year. “I have made the very difficult decision to pull out of the upcoming IPL. I apologise unreservedly to the Delhi Capitals and their supporters. It is a really important time for England cricket, and I want to fully commit to preparing for the upcoming series. In order to do this, I need time to recharge after the busiest period in my career to date,” Brook had said in an official statement.
Former Australian captain Michael Clarke too criticised the England player’s decision. “What did Harry Brook get bought for? Imagine he’s on a full contract with the ECB and he’s been banned now. Because this is what happens as well. A lot of players go into the auction, they don’t get picked up for the amount they would like and then they pull out. The IPL says if you pull out, you get an automatic two-year-ban. It sounds like Harry Brook is the first player to do that but I understand why the IPL would do that. Every player would like more money but once you go into that auction and you’re bought you’ve got to respect that and understand that you can’t just pull out because you haven’t been paid the amount that you want,” Clarke said while speaking on Beyond23 Cricket Podcast.
