Meta’s upcoming smart glasses may have a familiar operating system

Summary: Meta’s upcoming smart glasses could run a version of Android. They’ll have a screen, apps, and also come with a “Neural Wristband.”

Out of left field, Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses became a smash hit, selling more than a million units last year. They’re pretty feature-rich, but glasses from other companies are lapping them because they offer a floating display over wearers’ eyes. Well, Meta could change this with its new smart glasses that it’s working on. These new glasses could be running on pretty familiar software and come with an extra bit of hardware.

To recap, Meta partnered with Ray-Ban to produce a line of pricey yet useful glasses. These glasses come with a camera, microphones, and speakers. You can use them to summon Meta AI, take pictures/videos, listen to music, and more. If you’re interested, they do start at $299. That’s not a bad price, considering that the offerings from the competition can sometimes be twice that price.

Meta’s next smart glasses could run Android

Android is one of the most versatile operating systems on the market, as it exists in several types of devices. Heck, in a few months, it’s going to exist on an XR headset. Well, we will be able to mark off smart glasses as well. According to the report, these new Meta smart glasses, codenamed Hypernova, will have a “highly customized version” of Android, much like Horizon OS.

We’re sure that the resulting interface won’t resemble the Android we use on our phones. Folks close to the matter claim that the home screen will be pretty simple with app icons. There could be a camera app, a gallery app, and a map app, along with others. Be that as it may, there doesn’t seem to be an app store to download additional apps. That’s unfortunate, but we don’t see there being a large community of smart glasses app developers for quite some time.

Neural Wristband

What’s more interesting about Hypernova is how you’ll control them. You can control the current Meta Smart Glasses by tapping and swiping on the glasses themselves. Well, these new glasses could also have these gestures, but there could also be another method of controlling them. Meta could bring something called the Neural Wristband. This could be an accessory you wear on your wrist. The thinking is that you’d perform physical gestures to control the glasses.

This could be a neat idea, as you may be able to do subtle wrist movements to control the glasses. They’re not as conspicuous as raising your hands to your glasses. The report states that this could be included in the box with the glasses.
