The Dahisar police have arrested two men, an autorickshaw driver and his accomplice, who targeted people coming out of bars and restaurants after drinking.
Police said that the accused usually targeted heavily intoxicated individuals. Pretending to drop them home, they would take them to isolated locations, where they would assault and threaten them before looting their valuables, including cash, jewellery, and mobile phones, said police.
Police have identified the accused as Dinesh Brijraj Chaturved, 50, a resident of Dahisar East, and Rakesh Ambika Tiwari, 50, a resident of Kandivli East.
A complaint was filed by a victim with the Dahisar police station on 29 September. According to the complaint, the duo allegedly picked up the victim in the autorickshaw from outside a bar in Dahisar’s Anand Nagar area on September 28. They later took him to an isolated place and attacked him and forcibly snatched his gold chain, mobile phone, and debit/credit cards.
Based on the complaint, the Dahisar police registered a case under relevant sections of the BNS. Acting on a tip-off, a police team laid a trap near Gokulanand Hotel Junction in Dahisar East and apprehended the duo.
During the search, the police recovered the stolen mobile phone from Chaturvedi and seized his autorickshaw, which was used in the crime.
Investigations revealed that the duo are habitual offenders, with over six prior cases of extortion, theft, and property-related crimes registered against them in the Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar districts.
