In the last 13 days since its launch, the Mudhalvar Marundhagam in Salem district sold medicines worth ₹1.15 lakh, said District Collector R. Brindha Devi.
Following the launch by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, Tourism Minister R. Rajendran inaugurated sales in the district and medicines are sold at 20% to 90% discount.
The Collector said steps were taken to provide all medicines at affordable rates at the Mudhalvar Marundhagam in phases. Of the 32 outlets, 16 were run by the Cooperative Department and 16 by entrepreneurs. Generic medicines were sold at a discount of 20% to 90% and other medicines were sold at 25% discount. For example, metformin tablets provided to diabetic patients were sold at ₹70 by private pharmacies, while these medicines were sold for ₹11 at Mudhalvar Marundhagam, the Collector added.
The generic medicines were procured through the Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation and other medicines were procured through the Tamil Nadu Consumer Cooperative Federation. The entrepreneurs received ₹3 lakh subsidy to set up the outlet and for the outlets set up by the Cooperative Department, ₹2 lakhs subsidy was given, Ms. Brindha Devi added.
