Material 3 Expressive UI Rolls Out

Google wants to elevate your Android experience by refreshing its UI. With that in mind, the company worked on the latest update to its design language: Material 3 Expressive. We already had a sneak peek at what some key apps will look like with the new look. Now, Google has begun rolling out a brand-new look for Gmail, embracing Material 3 Expressive. Recently, the company also integrated AI-powered features, such as email summaries and context awareness.

Material 3 Expressive first debuted on Android with the Android 16 QPR1 beta. This set the stage for a new era of Google’s app aesthetics. Now, it’s Gmail’s turn, and some lucky folks are already getting a sneak peek. A user named SparkRadar on Telegram shared some screenshots from their Gmail app version 2025.05.11 (via Android Authority). That said, the changes appear to be server-side based. The latest update just enables the new design for select people.

Gmail’s Material 3 Expressive UI update

The most striking change is how your message list now sits as a distinct card on top of a lighter background. This adds a sense of depth and separation, making your emails pop. You’ll notice subtle rounded corners adorning the top and bottom of this card, contributing to the softer, more modern feel.

The “Compose” button, a staple of Gmail, also gets a refined look. It now sports a thicker font, and its iconic “Pencil” icon is filled in. The latter gives it more visual weight and presence.

Navigation is getting a subtle shift too. The account switcher (where you jump between your different Gmail accounts) appears to be moving outside the search bar. However, some screenshots show it still integrated within the search bar. This suggests Google is fine-tuning the placement.

When you open an email, the new design continues with a card-based UI. However, it has a slightly different edge-to-edge width for optimal viewing. Even the colors within snippets, like order summaries, are adopting lighter hues, contributing to an airier feel.

And it’s not just about static visuals. As Google has previously teased, the Material 3 Expressive update for Gmail also includes a new pill-shaped button animation for swipe gestures. This means that when you swipe to archive or delete an email, the visual feedback will be smoother and more delightful.

These changes are being rolled out gradually. So, if your Gmail hasn’t transformed yet, just hold tight. More and more users are expected to receive this vibrant new update in the coming days, bringing a fresh, modern, and more personal touch to your email experience.
