A man was arrested for allegedly stalking and sexually harassing two Australian women cricketers in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore on Thursday, The Indian Express reported.
The players, part of the Australian team participating in the ICC Women’s World Cup, were staying at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Indore. The team had played against England at the Holkar Stadium in the city on Wednesday.
On Thursday morning, the two cricketers stepped out of the hotel to visit a cafe when a man on a motorcycle started following them, unidentified police officers told the newspaper. He allegedly touched one of them inappropriately before riding away.
The incident occurred in the Khajrana Road area.
A bystander had noted down the accused person’s motorcycle registration number, based on which, a man identified as Aqueel Khan was arrested, The Times of India reported.
Subsequently, Danny Simmons, the team’s security manager, filed a complaint with the police.
The manager told the police that he had received a live location notification at 11.08 am from one of the players indicating distress, The Indian Express reported. A few minutes later, the player called Simmons and said that a man on a motorcycle had tried to touch one of them.
The players resisted, after which the man allegedly fled, they reportedly told the manager.
Soon after the incident, the team’s liaison officers and police officers arrived at the location and escorted the players back to their hotel, the newspaper reported.
A first information report was filed under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita pertaining to assault or use of criminal force on a woman with intent to outrage her modesty and stalking.
Rajesh Dandotiya, additional deputy commissioner of police (crime branch) in Indore, told The Indian Express that a complaint had been received from the Australian security team.
“A case was registered the same night, and the accused was arrested,” the newspaper quoted Dandotiya as saying. “The accused has previous criminal cases and we are looking into his record.”
The Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association said that several aspects of the incident needed to be examined, The Times of India reported.
“It is indeed an unfortunate incident in a city that is otherwise considered very safe for women,” the newspaper quoted Rohit Pandit, the chief administrative officer of the Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association, as saying.
He added: “There are several factors that need to be examined in this case, especially given that the team has a dedicated security officer from Cricket Australia, in addition to two security officers appointed by the BCCI [Board of Control for Cricket in India] and local police presence at the hotel.”
Cricket Australia is the governing body that oversees professional and amateur cricket in that country.
“We are not aware of the players having left the premises without informing or seeking permission from the security team,” Pandit added.
Meanwhile, Cricket Australia stated that two players in their women’s cricket team “were approached and touched inappropriately by a motorcyclist” in Indore, ABC News reported.
The board stated that the two women had been harassed by a person on a motorcycle, adding that the team had alerted the police.
