A man has been arrested for allegedly shouting abusive slogans about Prime Minister Narendra Modi during an Opposition rally in Bihar’s Darbhanga, the police said on Friday.
The incident took place on Wednesday during the INDIA bloc’s Voter Adhikar Yatra, which aims to highlight alleged irregularities in electoral rolls.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Yadav were not on stage when the slogans were shouted, The Hindu reported.
Videos of the incident have since been widely shared on social media, drawing sharp criticism from Bharatiya Janata Party leaders and its National Democratic Alliance partners.
The first information report was registered at the Simri police station and the accused will be produced in court, the Darbhanga Police said.
On Friday morning, BJP and Congress workers clashed in Patna during a protest by the Hindutva party against the slogans.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the “abusive and indecent” language used against Modi and his mother at the Darbhanga rally was condemnable and a “blot on democracy”.
“The Congress has reached its lowest ebb under Rahul Gandhi’s leadership,” Shah said in a social media post. “They cannot bear the fact that the son of a poor mother has been the prime minister for 11 years and has been taking the country forward with his leadership.”

Bihar Chief Minister and Janata Dal (United) leader Nitish Kumar called the alleged use of expletives “extremely disgraceful”.
Lok Janshakti Party chief and Union minister Chirag Paswan said that while differences of opinion were part of democracy, there was no place for vulgarity and indecent language.
“The kind of filthy and low-class language used for the respected Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji from the platform of Rahul Gandhi and Tejashwi Yadav is not just condemnable but shameful,” Paswan said. “The people of Bihar will not forgive these insulting words.”
The Congress, however, claimed that the slogans in abusive language were shouted by a BJP agent, ANI reported.
Pawan Khera, the chief of Congress’ media and publicity department said: “They [the BJP] just want to create an issue so that they can divert attention from our Yatra…Their theft has been caught, so these people are frustrated.”
