A 43-year-old auto-rickshaw driver was seriously injured after two couples allegedly assaulted him following a dispute over sharing water from a public source in Maharashtra`s Palghar district, police said on Monday, reported news agency PTI.

The incident took place at Alkapuri locality in Nalasopara area on Friday morning.

The local civic body has provided a public water tap opposite the victim`s house for the daily needs of residents. Water is supplied there every alternate day between 4 am and 8 am, an official from Achole police station said, reported PTI.

On Friday, the two couples residing in the neighbourhood started drawing water from the public tap using an electric motor, to which the victim objected, saying that by fetching at that rate, other local residents would be deprived of water, the police said, reported PTI.

The objection angered the two couples and they allegedly attacked the victim with a paver block lying on the road and iron rods, the official said.

“The attack left the victim badly injured. Neighbours rushed him to hospital, where he is undergoing treatment,” he said, reported PTI.

A case was registered against the four accused on Saturday under various Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections, including for voluntarily causing hurt and criminal intimidation, and a probe was on into it, the police said.

11 booked for assaulting woman over dispute involving minor boy

In another incident, the Bhiwandi city police registered an FIR against 11 persons for allegedly creating ruckus at the house of a woman and outraging her modesty during a late-night altercation, a senior officer said on Sunday, reported PTI.

Assistant Police Inspector Pramod Pardeshi said the dispute stemmed from frequent visits the 11-year-old son of the accused paid to the house of the woman, who is his neighbour, for playing, reported PTI.

The accused suspected that the woman intended to keep the boy with her permanently.

“On August 7, some persons visited the house of the woman, hurled abuses, and assaulted her with sticks. One of the accused, Umer Ahmed Raza, struck the complainant`s uncle in the face with a stone. The sister-in-law of the accused grabbed the complainant by the throat, dragged her, and tore her clothes,” he said, reported PTI.

An FIR was registered under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) on August 8.

Further investigation is underway to verify the sequence of events and arrest the accused persons.

“We are collecting CCTV footage from the vicinity,” Pardeshi added.
