Google started rolling out Android 16 QPR1 Beta 1 to eligible Pixel devices, the same day it kicked off this year’s I/O event. The latest beta update brings a bunch of new features that are worth talking about. One of which is the new Magic Portrait feature. If you have a Pixel device, you could already use the Cinematic Wallpaper feature to give your lock screen a more personalized look by generating unique wallpapers using the AI Wallpaper app. The Magic Portrait feature is here for a similar reason on Pixel devices, but with a twist.Â
Android QPR1 Beta 1 brings the new Magic Portrait feature to Pixel devices
Yesterday, folks over at Android Authority reported spotting the Magic Portrait feature in the Pixel Wallpaper app on their Pixel 9 Pro. As you might have already guessed, the new feature is part of the Android 16 beta released yesterday. The Magic Portrait feature takes your existing lock screen wallpaper and adds effects to make it look even cooler.Â
Once the Magic Portrait option is selected on the Pixel device, the system reportedly analyzes the lock screen wallpaper and cuts out a portion to place within a frame. The default frame is oval, but you can choose from various other shapes, including a rounded square and a clover. The system then surrounds the frame with an opaque background to make the wallpaper pop out. You can further customize that background with your choice of color, but there isn’t a color wheel for precise color selection.Â
If you don’t want a framing cutout, the Magic Portrait also allows you to apply weather effects to the lock screen wallpaper of your Pixel device. As seen in the image below, you can choose from different weather effects—fog, rain, snow, and sun. Once you choose a weather effect, it’ll add a dynamic touch to your wallpaper. For example, choosing the rain effect will let you see rain fall over the lock screen wallpaper. These effects help bring static shots to life, adding a more personal touch.Â
The feature will be exclusive to Pixel devices
As Google does with some features, the Magic Portrait will be exclusive to Pixel devices. In other words, other phones running Android 16 won’t get it. That said, device manufacturers can add such options from their end, which we have already seen. Samsung’s Live Effects feature, available on One UI 6.1.1 or later, works similarly. If you have a Pixel phone with Android 16 QPR1 Beta 1 installed, don’t forget to check this feature out.  Â
