The Pantnagar Police have arrested a 24-year-old man from Madhya Pradesh who allegedly came to Mumbai to illegally sell two country-made pistols and four live cartridges.

Acting on a tip-off, a police team laid a trap near Ghatkopar Bus Stop on the Ghatkopar–Andheri Link Road and nabbed the accused on Sunday afternoon.

According to officers, police received reliable information on Sunday that a man was travelling to Mumbai to sell illegal firearms. Around 3.30 pm, a trap was set at the specified location, where the suspect, matching the given description, was intercepted. Upon searching him, officers found two country-made pistols worth Rs 1.09 lakh and four live cartridges.

The accused has been identified as Ajay Kailash Kayata, a resident of Ujjain district. Mumbai Police said he was in possession of the weapons without a valid licence and intended to sell them illegally in the city.

Based on a complaint filed by constable Bhausaheb Ghuge, an FIR has been registered at Pantnagar Police Station under Sections 3 and 25 of the Indian Arms Act, along with Sections 37(1)(A) and 135 of the Maharashtra Police Act.

The accused was produced before the magistrate court in Vikhroli, which remanded him in police custody till Wednesday. Officers said further investigation is underway to trace the source of the firearms and identify potential buyers.
