Apple has long been a frontrunner when it comes to the smartwatch industry, consistently pushing the boundaries of wearable technology. The company’s emphasis on health and fitness tracking makes their smartwatches a go-to device for those who value an instantaneous insight to their health. Recently, reports have surfaced about a prototype of the Apple Watch Series 10, featuring a unique and potentially groundbreaking health sensor.
The Apple Watch Series 10 Prototype
On the 1st of April, 2025, an industry insider known as Stella-Fudge (@StellaFudge) shared leaked images on X (formerly Twitter) of an Apple Watch Series 10 prototype. The images reveal a distinctive sensor arrangement, which sparks much curiosity, as well as speculation. Unlike the existing Series 9 and the current Series 10 models, this prototype features a notably smaller sensor array. What stands out even more is the inclusion of an additional ring of lights circling the primary sensor, a design choice that could suggest that Apple is working on new health-monitoring capabilities.
Additionally, this prototype was reportedly running an unreleased build of watchOS 11.1, an indication that Apple is actively developing the necessary software optimizations required to support new hardware functionalities. While Apple has yet to confirm these details, the presence of a redesigned health sensor could be a hint to a major upcoming feature that could possibly redefine wearable health tracking.
The health sensor that is found on the back of the Apple Watch is used primarily to measure the wearer’s heart rate and blood oxygen levels. Due to certain patent disputes, these sensors were applied to models that were sold outside the United States. Currently, it is unclear as to why this sensor looks so different on this prototype, but these changes likely mean that the company is testing newer health-related features on the Apple Watch.
What could be achieved with a new health sensor?
Apple’s investment into health-related research has been expansive, with each iteration of the Apple Watch introducing new monitoring capabilities. The redesigned health sensor on the prototype appears to be a major step forward taken by the company. The presence of a secondary light ring on the prototype could signify improved accuracy in biometric tracking, or could be an entirely new type of health metric measurement.
Current Apple Watch models use optical heart rate sensors, electrical heart sensors (ECG), and blood oxygen monitors. The additional ring on the prototype could be part of an enhanced photoplethysmography (PPG) system, which uses light-based technology to measure blood volume charges. Apple has reportedly been testing a feature that could alert users to signs of high blood pressure, which was rumored a few years before the launch of the Series 10, but the company has continued to face certain development challenges. Alternatively, it could be linked to non-invasive glucose monitoring, which is an area Apple has been researching for years. If successful, this system would be a game-changer for millions of diabetic patients worldwide.
It is somewhat rare for manufacturers to develop a new health sensor for their wearable devices and not add any new metrics. While other companies are concentrating on the accuracy of their measured data, Apple happens to have an excellent system working already, with some of the most reliable heart rate measurements found on the market.
