Two persons were killed and two others injured on Saturday in Mumbai’s Vikhroli after a landslide triggered by heavy overnight rainfall in the city, The Indian Express reported.

The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for the city, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the next 24 hours.

The landslide struck a hut near Jankalyan Housing Society in Varsha Nagar at around 2.39 am, the newspaper quoted the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation as saying.

Authorities have since shifted other residents from the area to safer locations, reported PTI.

According to data from the weather department, Vikhroli recorded 257.5 mm of rain in the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Saturday. The Santacruz weather station recorded 245 mm of rainfall in the same period, whereas Sion saw 228 mm of rains and Juhu received 219.5 mm.

As a result, several low-lying areas, including Vikhroli, Ghatkopar, Bhandup, Andheri, Kings Circle, Malad and Goregaon, experienced severe waterlogging.

The city’s suburban train services on both Central and Western Railway lines were disrupted due to waterlogging on tracks at Dadar, Kurla, Sion and Tilak Nagar, PTI reported.

The Vikhroli area was previously identified by the Geological Survey of India as a landslide-sensitive zone.

In May, the municipal corporation had issued notices urging residents in the vulnerable zones to relocate.
