KKR’s Ramandeep Singh has ‘desi ghee first thing in the morning’

Ramandeep Singh, who plays for Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League (IPL), shared his diet secrets in a recent conversation with podcaster Raj Shamani. Digging deep into his daily diet during peak cricket season, the 27-year-old athlete shared that his meals include a combination of salmon, chicken, and ghee — loaded with essential nutrients for recovery and improved performance.

Breakfast

“Right now, peak season is on. I add desi ghee and some ginger to hot water and boil. I drink this first thing in the morning. After some mobility exercises, I have breakfast, which includes four egg whites and one whole egg. I also have a whole grain or multigrain toast and any fruit – be it 200 grams of pineapple or papaya. I also add 250 grams of Greek yoghurt, or sometimes plain curd, to my breakfast and a spoon of pure sugar, which is very powerful,” Singh told the host.

“Eggs and Greek yoghurt are a protein powerhouse, while fruits add fiber. Bread acts as an adequate source of carbohydrates. Adding sugar to curd promises a quick energy boost,” said Deepalakshmi, registered dietitian at Shree Balaji Medical Centre, Chennai.

Lunch and dinner

“For lunch, I have 250 grams of steamed rice, 150 grams of chicken breast and yellow dal, and a bowl of salad. I have a scoop of protein with sweet potato or a chicken sandwich for evening snacks, depending on whether I am playing. For dinner, I have salmon with salad and whatever sabzi is made — mixed veg is the best — with two wholewheat rotis with desi ghee,” said the cricketer.

According to Deepalakshmi, chicken breast, dal, and salmon are excellent sources of protein and essential for building and repairing muscles. Salad adds necessary fiber. Desi ghee, on the other hand, is loaded with anti-inflammatory properties, which help fight against diseases and improve overall immunity. Simple and hearty, Singh’s balanced meal plan helps him achieve his fitness goals while hitting all food nutrient groups.
