At a recent event in Dubai, Kamal Haasan confirmed what cinephiles have waited decades to hear: he and Rajinikanth will share the screen again after 46 years. Their last joint outing was in Allauddinum Arputha Vilakkum (1979), where Kamal played the lead and Rajini took on the antagonist’s role.
With a playful analogy, Kamal explained why the reunion took so long. “Back then, we used to share one biscuit. Later, we wanted one each. Now we have decided to share again. The audience will decide if it is truly a ‘Tharamaana Sambavam’.” His words drew laughter, applause and instant buzz online.
He also put to rest the long-standing narrative of rivalry. “It was never between us. We have always been friends. Competition was something others imagined,” he said, making it clear that this collaboration is rooted in respect and camaraderie. Kamal added that they had often spoken about producing films for one another but the timing had never worked out until now.
Lokesh Kanagaraj in the Mix
Details about the new project remain a mystery. There is no official word on the title, cast or release date. The strongest speculation is that Lokesh Kanagaraj, who has delivered some of the biggest Tamil hits in recent years, will be directing.
Lokesh has previously teamed up with both stars. He gave Kamal one of his biggest recent successes with Vikram and directed Rajinikanth in this year’s blockbuster Coolie. If he does helm this reunion, it will be the ultimate coming together of three of Tamil cinema’s biggest names.
Rajinikanth’s Coolie collected over ₹500 crore at the box office and quickly headed to streaming. Kamal, meanwhile, recently worked with Mani Ratnam on Thug Life and has Indian 3 and KH237 in progress. For both actors to clear their schedules for a joint project underlines just how special this film will be.
