Nearly three months after his last outing in Sydney during the New Year’s Test in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Jasprit Bumrah has been declared fit to return to competitive cricket through the IPL 2025 season with the Mumbai Indians.
MI confirmed Bumrah’s return to the camp with a video on social media, titled ‘Ready to Roar’. While he has received the fitness clearance from the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) medical team, Bumrah is unlikely to feature in MI’s immediate fixture at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Monday.
Since suffering from a back swelling injury after his extensive bowling workload in Australia, Bumrah was ruled out of India’s limited-overs series at home against England and also missed the triumphant Champions Trophy series in Dubai in February-March. Bumrah has had issues with his back earlier too. He missed nearly 11 months of cricket — from September 2022 to August 2023 — after undergoing a surgery. He made a comeback at a T20 match against Ireland.
Leading in two of the five Tests of the BGT series in Australia, Bumrah took 32 wickets and won the player of the series award. He sat out on the final day of the series in Sydney because of his injury. Australia won the series and took the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Bumrah is MI’s second highest-wicket taker in IPL history behind Lasith Malinga, tallying 165 wickets in 133 matches since his debut in 2013.
