The IPL 2025 Eliminator on Friday promises a thrilling, high-stakes encounter as Mumbai Indians square off against Gujarat Titans at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium.
While the knockout nature of the match adds immense pressure, both franchises are no strangers to such intense scenarios. Mumbai Indians, the most decorated team in IPL history with five titles, are seasoned playoff veterans. In contrast, Gujarat Titans have rapidly established themselves as formidable contenders, reaching the playoffs in three of their four seasons, including a championship win in their debut campaign in 2022.
Rohit Sharma’s playoff paradox
Rohit Sharma, joint-most successful player in IPL history alongside Ambati Rayudu with six titles, has cemented his legacy as a captain. However, his batting returns in playoffs paint a less flattering picture. In 21 playoff innings, he has managed just 316 runs at a modest average of 15.8, with only two fifties and nine single-digit scores, striking at just 109. He will be eager to change that narrative when it matters most.
Gujarat’s edge and match-ups to watch
Gujarat Titans, with a consistent top-order and structured approach, enter the Eliminator with a psychological advantage. They have won five of their seven encounters against Mumbai, including both league fixtures this season, and remain unbeaten against MI at home. Sai Sudharsan, the current Orange Cap leader with 679 runs at an average of 52.23 and a strike rate of 155.38, has been a standout performer. Yet, his personal battle against Trent Boult could define Gujarat’s innings. Boult, who has taken 19 wickets this season, has dismissed Sudharsan twice in 30 deliveries, conceding only 31 runs.
Mumbai’s strengths and Suryakumar factor
Despite missing key overseas players like Will Jacks and Ryan Rickelton, Mumbai’s depth and experience remain their strongest assets. The spotlight will once again fall on Suryakumar Yadav, who has been in sublime touch with 14 consecutive scores above 25. His form will be vital for MI, especially with a slightly depleted batting lineup.
Gill vs Bumrah
Another key face-off will be between Gujarat skipper Shubman Gill and Mumbai ace Jasprit Bumrah. Gill has been prolific this season with 649 runs at an average of 54.08. However, Bumrah has historically had the upper hand, conceding only 34 runs in 38 deliveries and dismissing Gill twice. Their early battle could dictate the momentum of the game.
