Former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly had accurately predicted two weeks ago, during a chat with this correspondent, that there would be a new winner in the ongoing IPL. And this is now certain after Punjab Kings knocked out Mumbai Indians in the Qualifier 2 on Sunday to set up a summit clash with Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
On Monday, the former India captain revealed the thought process behind his prediction. “At least four teams have been playing well right from the beginning of this IPL season, particularly Punjab [Kings], [Royal Challengers] Bengaluru and Gujarat [Titans]. Mumbai [Indians] organised themselves in the second half of the tournament. But I always thought that a new team would be the winner this time,” Ganguly, 52, told mid-day.
Though the stylish left-handed batter refused to make a prediction about the summit clash, he did mention which team has impressed him this far. “This has nothing to do with the final because that’s anybody’s game, but as far as Punjab are concerned, their main plus point is that they can deliver under pressure. They’ve got brilliant batters and they can accelerate easily. Overall, they are a very balanced team,” he added.
