Mumbai Indians made a surprise Impact Sub move during their IPL 2025 season opener at the MA Chidambaram Stadium against the Chennai Super Kings on Sunday as young Kerala spinner Vignesh Puthur made his IPL debut, replacing superstar Rohit Sharma as an Impact Sub.
Hailing from Malappuram, Kerala, the 23-year-old Puthur’s debut is interesting, particularly when the left-arm wrist-spinner has not featured in any match for his state at the senior level.

Son of an auto-rickshaw driver, Puthur has only played for Kerala at the under-14 and under-19 level. He was noted by MI scouts when he turned up for Alleppey Ripples during the Kerala Cricket League last year, where he only picked up two wickets from his three matches. Puthur also had a stint in the Tamil Nadu Premier League.
Puthur made the cut for the KCL T20 tournament after his impressive performances for his Jolly Rovers Cricket Club in Perinthalmanna before eventually being signed up by MI at the Mega Auction table in November 2024.
