Based on everything we know, the upcoming iPhone 17 Air will be the thinnest iPhone Apple has ever launched. We’ve seen various renders and dummy units, but to put things into more perspective, tipster Majin Bu shared more photos on their X account showcasing the iPhone 17 Air next to the iPhone 16 Plus.
iPhone 17 Air vs. iPhone 16 Plus
From what we can tell, the iPhone 16 Plus looks downright huge compared to the iPhone 17 Air. For context, the iPhone 16 Plus measures 7.8mm thick. It isn’t exactly the slimmest phone, but we wouldn’t exactly go as far as calling it thick or fat. However, when looking at it in this comparison, it’s massive.
We initially didn’t think much of the iPhone 17 Air. It felt like a novelty and borderline gimmicky. However, the more we look at it, the more impressed we are. What we’re more interested in and curious about is how it compares to Samsung’s own ultra-thin phone, the Galaxy S25 Edge.
The Galaxy S25 Edge measures 5.8mm thin, but Apple could have Samsung beat. According to the rumors, the iPhone 17 Air will measure 5.5mm thin. We’re unsure if you can tell the difference between 0.3mm in real life, but on paper, it’s something Apple can brag about.
Not all sunshine and roses
That being said, don’t expect too much from the iPhone 17 Air. Right now, its thinness and design are the only things it has going for it. Based on the rumors, Apple is compromising on certain features to make the phone as thin as it is. One of the biggest sacrifices is the camera.
The leaked renders and designs we’ve seen suggest that the phone will pack a single camera setup. This is downright disappointing in 2025, but who knows, maybe Apple’s image processing algorithms will make up for the lack of extra lenses and sensors. Also, we’re hearing that battery life will take a hit.
Apple is rumored to use silicon-carbon batteries for the iPhone 17 Air. This is a newer type of battery technology that allows batteries to be denser. This means that the physical size of the battery is smaller, but it can pack more juice. However, in this instance, it might not help.
Apple is expected to unveil the new iPhone 17 Air later this year. It will debut alongside the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max. It will also replace the Plus model.
