If there’s one thing we have to give credit to Apple, it’s that the adoption rate for the latest OS update is usually pretty fast. iOS 18 was released in 2024, and if you’re wondering how many iPhones are running it, Apple has released the figures along with iPads and iPadOS 18.
How many iPhones are running iOS 18?
According to Apple’s figures, a whopping 88% of iPhones released in the last four years are now using iOS 18. If we look at the overall figures, that stands at 82%, which is still pretty impressive. The figures also show that 9% of over devices are still using iOS 17.
Holdouts are to be expected. However, in Apple’s case, it’s pretty low. As for iPads, 81% of iPads released in the past four years are running iPadOS 18. But when we look at the overall figures, it’s much lower at 71%. This is compared to iOS 18, where the difference between devices released in the past four years and overall isn’t that much.
It is possible that iPad users don’t see the need to update their devices as often. Unlike our phones, some might only use their tablets to surf the web and watch videos, or act as a smart home hub. This means some iPad users don’t see the need or appeal to get the latest features.
Apple is set to announce the next major iOS and iPadOS update at WWDC next week. However, it might not be iOS 19. Recent rumors claim that Apple will start naming its updates after the year, so we might be looking at iOS and iPadOS 26.
How does Android stack up?
Based on Apple’s figures, it looks like the vast majority of iPhones have upgraded to iOS 18. So, the question is, how does it look from Android’s perspective? According to 9to5Google’s report in April, Android 15 is installed on an estimated 4.5% of Android devices. In fact, the Android update with the largest install is currently Android 14, which accounts for 27.4%.
This is due to the way Android updates are rolled out, where the manufacturer decides when to push them to their devices. However, Google has made some changes to the release schedule of major Android updates.
It has been moved up to middle of the year, so hopefully we’ll see an uptick in Android devices installing the latest update.
