India welcomes meeting between Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin

India on Saturday welcomed a meeting held between United States President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, and said that the world “wants to see an early end to the conflict in Ukraine”.

The Ministry of External Affairs said it welcomed the progress made during a summit meeting held in Alaska between Trump and Putin. “Their leadership in the pursuit of peace is highly commendable,” it said.

The foreign ministry said that the only way forward was through dialogue and diplomacy.

Trump said that the meeting with Putin “went very well”, as did a late-night phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

“It was determined by all that the best way to end the horrific war between Russia and Ukraine is to go directly to a Peace Agreement, which would end the war, and not a mere Ceasefire Agreement, which often times do not hold up,” the US president said.

Trump said that Zelenskyy will visit the White House on Monday afternoon, adding that “if all works out, we will schedule a meeting with President Putin”.

Russia invaded Ukraine exactly a year ago on February 24, 2022, triggering the most deadly conflict in Europe since World War II. Moscow claims it is a special military operation that is necessary to prevent Kyiv from being used as a platform for Western aggression. But Ukraine and its Western allies say it is an imperial-style war of occupation.
