Pune and other regions of Maharashtra are expected to experience rain and cloudy skies, which may provide some relief from the heat. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) indicated that this trend will continue for seven days.
Over the last few weeks, the intense heat caused Pune to report temperatures of over 38 degrees Celsius and above. Koregaon Park, Loheagoan Shrirur, and Chinchwad have seen temperatures crossing 40 degrees Celsius multiple times this month. Summer has set in early this year, with Pune’s Shivajinagar automatic weather station reporting a 10-year high temperature. February and March had not seen any letdown in temperature, with parts of Konkan experiencing heatwaves also.
Dr Anupam Kashyapi, former head of weather forecasting at the IMD, said the city could experience rain, lighting and even hailstorms. “High temperature and moisture incursion in Maharashtra resulted in atmospheric instability, and thus, cumulonimbus cloud could be formed, especially in the afternoon hours. Short spells of intense rains are likely,” Kashyapi said.
The lack of rain in the winter and the absence of western disturbance – cold winds that bring rain and snow in North India – have resulted in the complete absence of winter in Maharashtra. Given the region’s red soil or black cotton soil, the land has failed to cool down and thus has seen mercury rising. The state government has instructed schools to operate only in the morning sessions to avoid untoward incidents. Also, general warnings have been issued to take action against heatstroke.
