A fresh western disturbance is likely to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall and thunderstorms to northwest India between Sunday and Tuesday, with peak intensity on Monday, the India Meteorological Department has said.
Very heavy rainfall is expected in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana and Delhi on Monday.
Isolated heavy rainfall is also likely in parts of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan during this period.
Hailstorms are likely to occur in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Punjab on Sunday and Monday, and in parts of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi on Monday.
The weather department added that the fresh weather systems are likely to delay the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon, The Indian Express reported.
Authorities have advised residents to remain alert amid rapidly changing weather conditions.
Earlier, the India Meteorological Department had warned of 15% above-normal rainfall in October.
The department also forecast normal to below-normal maximum temperatures in much of the country in October, except in the northeast, where they could be above normal. Minimum temperatures are expected to stay higher than usual due to cloudy skies.
Odisha: One killed, two missing after heavy rain
One person was killed and two others were missing after heavy rainfall triggered multiple landslides in Odisha’s Gajapati district on Thursday, PTI reported.
The downpour, caused by a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal, intensified as the system made landfall near Gopalpur in Ganjam district on Thursday evening, the India Meteorological Department said. Rainfall continued until Friday morning.
Superintendent of Police Jatindra Kumar Panda said six landslides were reported in Gajapati over the past two days. “The deceased was buried under debris following a landslide under the jurisdiction of R Udaygiri Police Station,” he told PTI.
Seventy-year-old Kartika Shabara and his son Rajib Shabara were reported missing after a landslide struck near Pekat village in the district’s Rayagada block.
Rescue operations are underway, although key roads linking Rayagada with Nuagarh and R Udaygiri have been severed, said Panda.
He added that 24 tourists stranded on the Mahendragiri Hills due to a landslide were safely evacuated.
