Samsung is getting ready to announce its latest generation of foldables, which should include the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 – potentially the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE as well. And while Samsung’s Summer Unpacked event is typically pretty packed with products, there’s one product in particular that I’m very excited about.
That’s the Galaxy Z Fold 7.
Why am I so excited for a 7th-generation Foldable? Well, because it’s slated to be the biggest upgrade ever to the Galaxy Z Fold lineup. And Smausng is finally catching up to its Chinese competition.
It’s no secret that I’ve never really been a big Samsung fan. I’ve always preferred Google devices, the Pixel, and the Nexus before that. And even before that, I was a big LG user with the LG G2. Though for the past 5 years, I’ve been an iPhone user, OnePlus and OPPO have slowly taken my iPhone away from me, for their own devices. This is thanks to a lot of the iPhone and Mac Features that they have added recently.
Now, Samsung might be doing the same. And it’s a bit puzzling to see why. I’ve never been a big fan of Samsung’s software, though I think their current software is the best they’ve ever had on a smartphone. But when you use a Samsung phone, it just feels more mature. And I really have no clue how I can explain that. But it’s especially present on foldables.
While I do prefer OnePlus’ Open Canvas or OPPO’s Boundless View, Samsung’s One UI just feels like it’s been baking longer.
Galaxy Z Fold 7 might become my new daily driver
Last year, when the Galaxy Z Fold 6 came out, I tried hard to make that my daily driver. And it was my daily driver for about a month before the HONOR Magic V3 and Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold came across my desk. One of the big things that made me switch to those was the wider front display – the other was the thickness. Two things that Samsung has reportedly fixed on the Galaxy Z Fold 7 this year.
The Galaxy Z Fold 7, is rumored to measure in at about 3.9mm when unfolded and 8.8mm when folded. That would make it even thinner than the OPPO Find N5, which is currently the world’s thinnest foldable at 4.2mm and 8.9mm respectively. That’s pretty impressive for Samsung, and a huge change from last year’s Galaxy Z Fold 6.
Additionally, the front display is also getting wider. Many leakers are expecting it to be about the same size as a regular smartphone display, meaning it will be around 20:9 or 21:9 aspect ratio. So that skinny front display is gone, finally.
Those were the two biggest things keeping me from using a Galaxy Z Fold 6 for the rest of the year, in between reviewing other devices. But that’s not all that Samsung has up its sleeve for the Galaxy Z Fold 7.
The colors. I know, I know, a lot of people don’t care about the color of their phone because “you’re just going to put a case on it”. But I absolutely love that Blue Shadow color that is currently being shown in different leaks. Samsung has used blue as their hero color on all of the Galaxy S25 models this year, and we expect that to continue on the Galaxy Z Fold 7. And this color is simply amazing.
Finally, Samsung is also ditching that under-display camera that looked absolutely terrible. At this point, Samsung should either just ditch the camera altogether or go back to a hole punch. But it looks like Samsung has opted to return to a hole-punch camera on the inner display. Which means there are two hole punch cameras here.
Can Samsung take back their foldable crown?
They sure are going to try. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 seems to be doing just about everything that their Chinese competitors are doing. Thinner phones, wider front displays, but they are still behind on the camera and battery capacity. Two things that I think Samsung will address next year. The company can’t update everything at the same time, otherwise, no one would update next year.
Now, the primary camera is being upgraded to the 200-megapixel sensor from the Galaxy S25 Ultra this year. But the telephoto is still quite lacking as a 10-megapixel 3x telephoto sensor. So we expect to see that upgraded next year. And battery capacity is also still at 4,400mAh, which is quite low compared to the competition. Even Google has managed to put a significantly larger battery in their foldable.
But, where this is the foldable that will be available in the most markets, we are expecting this to help Samsung take back its foldable crown. Remember, Samsung was really the first to market with foldables, and captured a huge part of that market. And then just rested on their laurels letting competitors like OnePlus, Google, OPPO, vivo, HONOR, Huawei and others catch up, and in some instances, overtake Samsung. That seems to be history now.
