Hyderabad, July 2: The Kanchanbagh police have arrested a 27-year-old man for allegedly possessing 7.5 kilograms of ganja, estimated to be worth ₹1,86,000 in the illegal market. The accused has been identified as Mohammad Amer, a resident of Errakunta in Balapur, who works as a driver by profession.

According to police, Amer had been employed as a driver for the past five years. However, due to low income, he turned to the illegal drug trade to make extra money. He came into contact with Mohammad Ismail alias Shabba, a known ganja supplier from Hafeez Baba Nagar, who sold him ganja at the rate of ₹2,000 per 100 grams.

Police said Amer used to resell the contraband at nearly double the price, making significant profits. Acting on a tip-off, police apprehended him and seized 7.5 kilograms of ganja from his possession.

A case has been registered against Amer under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. Authorities said further investigation is underway to trace other individuals involved in the supply chain.

The arrest highlights the increasing trend of youth from economically weaker sections being drawn into the illegal drug trade for quick money, police added.
