Hundreds of flights delayed after glitch in air traffic control

Hundreds of domestic and international flights were delayed at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport on Friday after the air traffic control system suffered a technical problem.

The exact number of affected flights was unclear. Reuters reported that about 200 flights were delayed, while Deccan Herald said that the number was more than 300.

The airport issued a statement saying that the automatic message switching system, which supports the air traffic control’s flight planning process, had developed a fault.

The Airports Authority of India said that air traffic controllers were processing flight plans manually, leading to delays. “Technical teams are working to restore the system at the earliest,” the authority said on social media.

The problem began on Thursday evening, the Deccan Herald quoted an unidentified official as saying.
