Heroes are like gods. They can destroy the film industry!

In a recent interview, top exhibitor Suniel Narang commented that heroes don’t have to reduce their fees because they are like gods in a country of 1.4 billion. “In this vastly populated country, there are just 40-50 heroes. They are nothing less than gods,” he said.

Suniel Narang has skin in the game. As someone who has been in the exhibition business for decades, he knows why star power matters. Star pull is everything. A content film like Shankarabharanam or a Nuvve Kavali might become a blockbuster, but everyone knows that such examples are few and far between. On the other hand, superstars can pull off blockbusters with average content.

That said, the logic that heroes should be appeased no matter what is self-defeatist. Tollywood and Kollywood are among the biggest losers because they appease their heroes. Karan Johar, who has produced multiple Bollywood movies, is far more intelligent than most filmmakers in the country. Here is what he once said: “These heroes are beyond deluded. They are demanding Rs 25-30 Cr without delivering a single box office blockbuster,” Johar commented in 2022 about some Hindi actors.

Telugu heroes are notorious for pocketing as much as Rs 15-25 Cr with no proven consistent track record. Some films flop spectacularly and shockingly because of their greed.

A superstar like Aamir Khan has no god complex. Which is why he doesn’t get anything if a movie flops. Why don’t others follow this revenue-sharing model?
