In an exclusive quote to Filmfare, director Razneesh “Razy” Ghai opened up about why he chose Farhan Akhtar to play the lead role of Major Shaitan Singh in his upcoming film, ‘120 Bahadur’. His comments shed light on the unique qualities that made Farhan the ideal choice, not just as an actor but as a collaborator on the project. 

Razneesh Ghai’s admiration for Farhan’s acting comes from a very personal place. He shared, “For me, it was his sincerity. Whether it’s Bhaag Milkha Bhaag or the other roles he has taken on, there is an honesty he brings to every performance that I’ve always admired. When he said yes, I was absolutely delighted.” Razneesh also added that he believes this sincerity is a quality that shines through in all of Farhan’s work and was essential for bringing a character like Major Shaitan Singh to life. The two have a history, having worked on commercials together, but Razneesh mentions that this project was “on an entirely different scale.” 

One of the most surprising and impressive aspects of working with Farhan, according to Razneesh, was his humility on set. As a successful filmmaker himself, Farhan Akhtar has a deep understanding of the movie-making process. However, Razneesh was quick to praise him for never letting his own directorial experience interfere with his role as an actor. He explained, “Being a filmmaker himself, Farhan understands what it takes to mount a story of this nature. Yet, not once did he wear his director’s hat on set. If he had a suggestion, he would always come with, ‘Razy, if I may…’—that kind of humility and respect is rare.” This respect and trust in his director is what makes Farhan a true “director’s actor” in his eyes.

The director also highlighted the remarkable work ethic and dedication that Farhan Akhtar brought to the role. He said, “The way he prepares for a role, the hard work he puts in—it’s remarkable.” This shared commitment to their work created a strong bond between the two. He concluded by saying, “I see a lot of myself in him, because I too am a perfectionist. That’s why we got along so well, and shooting this film with him was an absolute joy.”

Based on the true story of the Battle of Rezang La in 1962, 120 Bahadur is directed by “Razy” Ghai, and produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar of Excel Entertainment, with Amit Chandrra from Trigger Happy Studios. The theatrical release of 120 Bahadur is slated for November 21, 2025.
