Have OTTs Found Their Formula?

Crime thrillers and murder mysteries are commonplace on OTT platforms. Many of them these days feature death scenes just a few minutes into their run-time.

As per a recent Hollywood Reporter India report, writers and creators have lately been instructed by Indian OTT executives to write a death scene right at the start of the show to create viewer interest. “Someone has to die within the first five minutes of a show,” is the brief the writing community receives. “Begin at the end; hook your viewer; sink with them,” the OTT platforms tell the writers.

The magazine quotes these web originals to buttress its report: Dabba Cartel, Aranyak, Class, Mai, and Kohrra on Netflix, Pataal Lok season 2 on Amazon Prime Video, Maharani season 2 on SonyLIV, and Rudra: The Edge of Darkness JioHotstar had such beginnings in recent times.

True crime and thriller genres, which often open with a death or murder, are popular on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.

Death scenes in many English-language originals are staged well. Well-made scenes are chilling to watch. When Indian creators try to imitate the style, the template looks forced.
