Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi took oath as the deputy chief minister after the Bharatiya Janata Party government in the state carried out a Cabinet reshuffle. Sanghvi, 40, became the youngest person to hold the post in Gujarat.

Two hundred and ten Maoists, including a central committee member of the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist), surrendered in Chhattisgarh’s Jagdalpur. Among those who surrendered were four members of the Dandakaranya Special Zonal Committee, 21 from the divisional committee and 61 from area committees of the banned organisation.
This came a day after Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced that 258 persons associated with the Maoist movement had surrendered in Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra on Wednesday and Thursday. Read on.
The Singapore Police Force said it does not suspect foul play in the death of singer Zubeen Garg following preliminary investigations in the matter. It added that the probe may take up to three more months, following which it will be decided if the matter requires an inquiry by a judicial officer.
The police force said that the outcome of such an inquiry, if held, will be made public and urged the public “not to speculate and spread unverified information”. Read on.
The Bangladeshi government said that the lynching of three of its citizens in India’s Tripura was a “heinous act” and a “grave violation of human rights and the rule of law”. On Wednesday, the three men were allegedly hacked to death near the border in Tripura’s Khowai district by Indian villagers. The villagers suspected the Bangladeshis to be cattle thieves.
The three men had crossed into Indian territory two to three days before the assault.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs alleged that the three Bangladeshis were smugglers who had killed one resident. It also urged Bangladesh to “uphold the sanctity of the international boundary and support the construction of fencing”. Read on.
Activist Sharjeel Imam will not contest the Bihar Assembly elections, his brother Muzammil Imam said. Sharjeel Imam, who has been in jail for more than five years, is accused of being part of a “larger conspiracy” behind the 2020 Delhi riots. He had said in July that he would contest the polls as an independent candidate from the Bahadurganj constituency.
The main reason for his decision to not contest was that the Delhi High Court had rejected his bail petition on September 2, and the Supreme Court did not grant him interim relief, he said in a message that his brother posted on social media.
Sharjeel Imam said that the state had “put hurdles on our path”, because of which he would not be able to personally campaign and meet voters in the constituency. Read on.
