Imagine Hindi cinema without Pyaasa (1957). Or Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959). In his tragically short career, Guru Dutt enriched Indian cinema in a way that only few could. It’s only fitting then that Bollywood may get a biopic, and a long overdue one at that, on one of its most influential filmmakers soon. mid-day has learnt that Ultra Media & Entertainment Group, which owns the rights to Dutt’s movies, is not only considering adapting some of his finest works into web series, but also planning a biopic on the actor and filmmaker.
Rajat Agrawal, COO and Director, Ultra, reveals, “While biopics are always challenging because they need to emulate an individual’s greatness and achievements, we would be happy to collaborate with producers and a modern-day director, who is a fanatic of Guru Dutt, and see where the project goes.” He adds that he has initiated conversations with two directors to bring the filmmaker’s journey, which was marked by successes and turmoil, to screen. “I have spoken to two highly revered directors, who are interested in recreating his movies into web series, and also make [a film] on his life. Once we have something definite, we can talk about it in detail. We are in touch with his family members.”

Stepping into the shoes of Dutt will be no mean feat. Does he have an actor in mind who can depict the artiste’s magic and melancholy truthfully? “Naming one actor would be difficult as there is a plethora of talent, but I feel Vicky Kaushal can bring Guru Duttji’s emotional depth,” shares Agrawal.
Earlier this month, the media group unveiled the restored versions of Dutt’s classics — Pyaasa, Kaagaz Ke Phool, Chaudhvin Ka Chand (1960), and Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962) — at the Cannes Film Festival 2025 to mark his birth centenary. Ahead of the legend’s birth anniversary on July 9, a week-long tribute is being planned as part of which Dutt’s restored films will be re-released in Indian theatres. Agrawal elaborates, “All his movies have been restored in the original black-and-white version to give the same nostalgic feel. However, we are looking at colourising a few songs to see the audience’s reaction. There will also be curated exhibitions and panel discussions on his timeless legacy by prominent filmmakers.”
