Several videos emerged on the Internet in recent years, highlighting the disregard for cleanliness and basic etiquette in public places. A video of Gujarati actor Hitesh Thakkar eating khaman seated on the floor with his friends at Surat Airport has sparked a fresh debate on X.
The viral video shows newspapers spread on the floor and his friends serving khaman on them. “We don’t see the place when it comes to eating. This is Surat Airport, and my friends got delicious khaman. We are sitting on the floor and eating before boarding our flight to Pattaya, Thailand,” Thakkar says in Gujarati. Sharing the video, an X handle @AgentSaffron wrote, “Proud of this Indian uncle who upheld his traditional diet and eating style in the airport gate before boarding flight to Bangkok. Be proud of your roots.”

The video quickly gained traction, amassing nearly four lakh views and igniting a discussion over civic sense in public places. Several users slammed Thakkar for disrupting fellow flyers at the airport, with one commenting, “What a waste fellow. He belongs to the 75% Indians who are uncivilized.”
Another user wrote, “I also proud of my eating habits and will encourage to do it. But, No this uncle is not doing good, it is this kind of encouragement which helps people us make bad. Do this at your home or at right place. Boarding gate is not your home and not a restaurant.” A third user said, “Missing civic behaviour.”
“He is an idiot and so men around him. This is neither an Indian culture nor hygienic. You are a guest in foreign country and you should treat it as such,” a fourth user commented.
