Gujarat Confidential: Taking a toll | Ahmedabad News

On a day a pamphlet calling upon local residents in Karjan to join a protest against the increasing fares of the Karjan-Bharthana toll became public, a letter from Vadodara District BJP President Satish Patel, addressed to the toll operator on an official letterhead, became a topic of discussion. The protest, planned for April 11 by “local farmers and residents of Karjan” is not meant to be viewed as a “political protest”, as per locals. However, Patel’s “crisp” letter to Parth India Limited — the operator of the Bharthana Toll Plaza — on Monday urges that local vehicles from Karjan with Vadodara RTO registration should be allowed free pass at the toll. Patel’s letter states, “This is to request you to take appropriate steps to ensure that all four-wheelers belonging to Karjan Taluka should be allowed free passage through the Karjan-Bharthana toll plaza.” Locals in Karjan said that leaders of “all parties” have been invited to join the protest on April 11 before which a non-political memorandum will also be submitted to the Deputy District Collector, seeking relief for locals.

All for a reel

Animal rescue volunteers, who are working with the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) during the ongoing desilting of the crocodile-infested Vishwamitri river, threatened to withdraw from the project on Monday, seeking legal action against the employees of one of the contractors, who allegedly filmed a reel with a crocodile in the background and posted it on social media. A group of animal rescue volunteers visited the office of the Range Forest Officer (RFO) of Vadodara, demanding that a case be lodged under the Wildlife Protection Act provisions as crocodiles are protected under Schedule I of the Act. RFO Karansinh Rajput, however, said that since the persons seen in the video had “not violated the provisions of law”, they could not be booked in the case. Rajput said though a complaint was submitted due to a “personal objection” raised by one of the animal volunteers, it “did not fit into the provisions of law” as clicking pictures or videos of the crocodile from a distance is not prohibited.
