The last day of the nearly-40-day Budget Session of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly witnessed BJP and Congress legislators sharing some light moments. Senior Congress MLA Shailesh Parmar, who was chairing the House in absence of Speaker Shankar Chaudhary, had to deal with requests from BJP MLAs, including a few ministers, in the absence of Congress MLAs in the House at one point. After presenting their views during a discussion on the Gujarat Bovine Breeding (Regulation) Bill, Congress MLAs left, and the entire Opposition bench remained empty. BJP MLAs, including Minister of State Jagdish Vishwakarma, Arjun Modhwadia and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Rushikesh Patel raised an objection, citing a rule, according to which, during the discussion on budget or a bill in the House, the MLAs, who have already spoken on the issue, should remain present. As they continued seeking “appropriate action” against the Congress legislators, the Opposition MLAs started entering the House thus ‘rescuing’ Parmar from the “uncomfortable” situation. Parmar too ruled out the objections, stating that the rule applies when the minister concerned is addressing the House and that Congress MLAs were back when the minister was yet to start his address.
