The BJP’s Vadodara unit is keeping a watch on the office-bearers of the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) following an embarrassing situation where Mayor Pinky Soni publicly spoke about being “sidelined” by Municipal Commissioner Dilip Rana and Standing Committee Chairman Dr Sheetal Mistry in the ongoing Vishwamitri project. Senior leaders said that although the city’s office-bearers had called a meeting and “warned” all leaders to adhere to the party’s line of discipline, the “cold war” among the office-bearers was “visible”. On Wednesday, at the Madhavpur Ghed Mela, Mistry was spotted with Rana, while Soni remained aloof. Earlier this week, residents from Soni ward arrived at VMC to meet Mistry with grievances related to a broken slab of a stormwater drain instead of approaching the Mayor directly, raising eyebrows. A senior leader said, “Frankly, the party is peeved at this immature behaviour by the office-bearers. After the party leaders warned them to conduct themselves with grace, the Mayor, (the Standing Committee) Chairman and Municipal Commissioner were seen together inspecting the Vishwamitri project. But since we have an eye on the issue, we know that the Mayor and Standing Committee Chairman have not been discussing issues pertaining to the civic body with one another for a few weeks. This kind of hostility will not do good to the party or the people. The party will certainly make note of this in the upcoming civic body polls.” ()
A departmental chargesheet
Late last month, Surat Municipal Commissioner Shalini Agrawal issued a departmental chargesheet to City Engineer of Surat Municipal Corporation, Akshay Pandya, just two days before his date of retirement on March 31. The chargesheet was in relation to a order for water supply work issued to a firm, Green Design and Engineering Services, without floating tender. Agrawal had issued Pandya a show-cause notice and the latter had also replied to the same, after which the Commissioner had issued the chargesheet. (Kamaal)
