
The committee appointed to assess the need for implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state is meeting several citizens, activists and leaders. On Monday, the panel covered nearly five districts in Saurashtra where among those present in the meeting in Surendranagar was renowned humourist Shahbuddin Rathod, 87, who was awarded a Padma Shri in 2020. Also present was another Padma Shri, Muktaben Dagli, 63, a social activist who has been working for the visually impaired. This meeting was chaired by a member of the UCC panel and former IAS officer CL Meena. In February, the Gujarat government had formed a five-member committee headed by retired Supreme Court judge Justice Ranjana Desai to “assess the need” for the Uniform Civil Code and prepare a draft law.
