Google’s Phone App Is Getting a Redesign… But You’ll Have to Wait to Actually Use It

While Android 16 is set to launch tomorrow, as we exclusively confirmed back in November that update will not have Material 3 Expressive that debuted at Google I/O last month. That will be part of the QPR1 update that should come out around August or September. This gives Google’s other teams time to update their apps with the new design, including the Phone app.

Android Authority has torn down the Google Phone APK and found some tweaks that are coming to the app, including what the Material 3 Expressive redesign will look like.

This is from the beta version of the Phoner by Google app, version 177.0.763181107-publicbeta-pixel2024. It shows some visual tweaks that apply to the incoming call and in-call menus.

You’ll see that there are some slight changes with the Material 3 Expressive version, including the new toggles. These look much like the Quick Settings Toggles, where they are round when off, and more of a squircle when turned on.

There are a few other tweaks that Android Authority has found, like the “call from” text being omitted now, and the phone number is no longer shown after you answer the call.

Material 3 Expressive is coming to more and more Google apps

We’ve already seen this redesign teased on a handful of other Google apps, so it was only a matter of time before the Phone by Google app got this redesign.

Since launching last month at Google I/O, Material 3 Expressive has been pretty polarizing. People either love it, or hate it, there’s no in-between. What we’ve found, from asking our audience, is that those that hate it, haven’t tried it. And those that love it, are running the Android 16 QPR1 Beta 1 on their Pixel device. So this comes back to, you should reserve judgement until you see it on your own device.
