Google’s new security feature might be the snitch you actually want

Security is a major part of the smartphone experience, as we store some extremely sensitive information on our devices. This is why Google puts a ton of money and effort into fortifying Android. While there are several security features present within Android, Google hasn’t stopped introducing features. The company is working on a feature called Intrusion Detection for Android 16, and it really goes the extra mile.

We keep a ton of data on our phones, much more than we think. We’re not just talking about bank information and passwords. Our phones also hold information like location data, IP addresses, and much more. Just owning a phone and logging into a Google account makes your device a treasure trove of sensitive data. This is why data privacy and security are so important.

Android 16 could bring the Intrusion Detection feature

At this point, we don’t know if Google will officially launch this feature. It was discovered through an APK Deep dive at Android Authority. So, there’s a chance that Google could shelf this feature sometime down the road. There’s code hidden within the Google Play Services app version 25.18.31 that points to Intrusion Detection.

There are several strings that point to Intrusion Detection and what it could possibly do. It’s a pretty interesting feature, and it might be exclusive to Android 16 when/if it launches. The software will record certain bits of data about your phone, like lock screen information, USB events, browsing history, app installs, Wi-Fi information, and more. It will then encrypt that data and upload it to a secure and encrypted Google Drive.

You’ll be able to look through these logs if you notice any suspicious activity on your phone. Say, you notice that it’s acting sluggish or behaving weird. The thinking behind this feature is that you can look through the log to see if there was any activity that you don’t recognize. Since Google Drive is encrypted, it’ll have to be decrypted before anyone can access it. You’ll need your Google password and lock screen to decrypt the drive.

According to the strings, Intrusion Detection could be a part of the Advanced Protection Mode in Android 16. If that’s the case, then people using older versions of Android might not be able to use this feature.
