Google Calendar is one of the most useful tools for scheduling your life. While the tool integrates with other apps in the Google ecosystem, it can also integrate with third-party apps, making it extremely versatile. However, Google Calendar will be able to block apps from using its API.
Third-party apps can’t just integrate with Google Calendar intrinsically. The company released the Calendar Provider API. Third-party companies use this API to let their services integrate with Google Calendar. By using the API, other services can view, create, and delete Calendar events.
Let’s say you sign on to a work platform that lets you organize tasks for you and your team. That platform can integrate with your Google Calendar and create events to help keep you and your team on track.
Google will be able to block third-party apps from using the Google Calendar Provider API
Obviously, giving third-party companies the ability to view your Calendar events can pose a security risk. You never know what sorts of companies will secretly snoop on you for private information. This is why the Calendar Provider API should only be used by trustworthy companies.
The thing is that, as it stands, if an app supports the API, it could potentially view your Calendar data without your knowledge. Google has been working on a feature that will allow your software to block an app from accessing the Calendar Provider API.
This means that, even if the app does support the API, it won’t be able to access the data. Obviously, if you have to worry about an app snooping on your data, you probably shouldn’t have it on your phone to begin with. However, this is more about giving you more control over what happens on your phone.
How it works
You will see a pop-up appear when you open the Google Calendar app. The pop-up will have text reading, “Your Calendar data is currently available to other apps on the device. You can control data sharing in the Calendar settings screen.” On the pop-up, you will see the Got it button that will close it, and you will see the Go to Calendar settings button that will transport you to the proper location..
In the settings, you see a toggle letting you block Calendar from sharing its data with other apps on your phone. Under the toggle, you’ll see the text, “Turning this off may not affect all apps on the device.” That’s pretty worrying, but there is a Learn more button right next to it, so you’ll be able to read more about it.
This feature is currently rolling out, so users should be able to see it in the near future. Also, you may want to manually update the Calendar app if an update is available.
