Google TV Hit by Budget Cuts as YouTube Becomes Top Priority

Google is one of the richest companies in the world, earning billions of dollars in revenue each year. But that doesn’t mean it won’t make budget cuts to some of its services. It looks like the company is cutting the budget for its smart TV platform, Google TV, in a change of strategy that will prioritize YouTube.

Google cuts Google TV budget by 10%

According to The Information’s report, Google is cutting the budget for the Google TV platform. The brand is reportedly making a 10% cut. Unfortunately, this decision is already causing layoffs in the Google TV team.

Sources have not yet provided a specific number of layoffs. However, it is said that the team consists of around 300 people, and with the latest decision, the company laid off a quarter of them. This seems like a critical situation considering the total budget for Google TV is around $500 million, and there is a 10% cut.

For those who don’t know, Google TV is a smart TV platform supported by major brands such as Hisense and TCL. Only time will tell how these budget cuts will affect those partnerships.

Google TV will not die

That said, this decision should not be interpreted as the company giving up Google TV. Google made the following statement: ‘’We continue to invest in Google TV with new user experiences, including the upcoming integration of Gemini. There are more than 270 million Android TV devices, and we remain committed to growing this ecosystem with an exciting road map ahead.’’

Google’s statement focuses specifically on Gemini integration. If all goes well, the company will integrate its AI model into the platform this year. This will make it easier for users to communicate with their devices. In short, Gemini will offer Google TV users smarter and more interactive experiences.

Google planning a major change for YouTube

YouTube has been a part of our lives since 2005. It can be described as a video hosting platform by concept. According to rumors, Google is working on something major for the platform.

Google could make YouTube appear more like platforms such as Disney+ or Netflix, which offer paid content and shows. It is even said that important developments may happen in the coming months.
