Google has started rolling out a Search widget redesign on Android, a mini makeover. Yes, we’re talking about the Google Search widget that is tied to the Google app on Android, in case you were wondering.
This is not a huge redesign, but… it is worth talking about, as Google did tweak some things. You can check out the old and new designs below, side-by-side, courtesy of 9to5Google.
As you can see, the previous design placed four icons inside a pill-shaped container. The Google logo was on the left, while three icons were on the right. Those icons are an optional shortcut, a microphone for voice input, and Google Lens.
The new design has a pill-shaped container inside a pill-shaped container, and another circular container on the right. The pill-shaped container that takes up most space here includes the Google logo on the right, along with that voice input icon and Google Lens options on the right.
You can ditch the custom icon option, if you want
The icon that is placed into a separate circle, all the way to the right, is the custom action option. Google decided to separate it, and thus ended up with a different design of the search widget. Do note that you can disable that custom option, though, in which case there will be no separate container on the right.
This new widget is also a bit taller than the one before. It goes hand-in-hand with Material 3’s thicker search fields and Expressive’s rule of placing everything in containers. You’ll notice that the background container is see-through, to a degree.
Another thing worth noting is that you need to keep the 4×1 width in order to see all four buttons here, instead of 3×1. Tapping the G logo opens the Google app. This change is visible with Google app 16.19, though it’s a server-side update, so just because you have that version doesn’t mean you’re already seeing the change.
