Google is taking action to protect Chrome users’ data, and its latest patch appears to fix a dangerous security vulnerability. The tech giant gave many details about the new security update in a blog post, stating that it has been released for Windows for now. Android, macOS, and Linux users may expect the latest patch in the coming days.
Google’s latest patch for Chrome on Windows fixes a high-risk security flaw
Google has released a patch named 134.0.6998.177/178 for Chrome on Windows. Chrome’s latest patch addresses a high-risk vulnerability called CVE-2025-2783. The flaw was discovered by Kaspersky’s Global Research and Analysis Team and reported to Google on March 20. Google’s emergency response team quickly took action and resolved the issue with a new Chrome patch.
Kaspersky researchers say the CVE-2025-2783 vulnerability allows hackers to bypass Chrome’s sandbox protections. These protections make web pages or extensions run in an isolated environment, preventing malicious code from directly affecting the browser or devices.
Researchers believe the vulnerability is part of a two-chain hacking campaign called Operation ForumTroll, where phishing emails were the first step, and hackers used the flaw to access user data in the second step.
Not just Chrome, but all Chromium-based browsers are at risk
Boris Larin, one of the researchers who discovered the issue, says that hackers exploited the vulnerability as if there were no security limits in browsers, gaining access to user data. He believes the zero-day vulnerability is more dangerous than others before it.
The researcher states that the issue affects all Chromium-based browsers, not just Google Chrome. He also warns users to update their browsers to the latest version. Therefore, updates addressing the flaw may be released for other browsers, such as Brave, Vivaldi, and Microsoft Edge, in the coming days.
Updating Google Chrome is a fairly simple process. Although the browser usually updates itself, sometimes it may need your help. You can update your browser to the latest version by following the steps Menu > Help > About Google Chrome.
Hackers will always attempt to exploit such vulnerabilities to steal user data. Therefore, it is important to keep all the software you use up to date, whether on a computer, phone, or tablet. Also, using reliable security software will help protect you from potential threats.
