Google Messages Is Getting a New Coat of Paint—at a Snail’s Pace

Google’s new Material 3 Expressive is overtaking the company’s applications, much like Material You did. This new design mentality has already started making its way to a few apps, but we’re only at the beginning. Google Messages beta users reported seeing Material 3 Expressive elements in the app. However, this rollout is a bit weird and inconsistent.

These changes are coming to the beta channel for the app, so if you’re not a beta tester, you won’t see them. Joining the beta is pretty easy to do. Just go to the Google Messages page on the Play Store and scroll down until you see the Join the beta section. Once you join, you should get an update right away to install the beta version.

Google Messages users are starting to see Material 3 Expressive changes

Google has been working on changes to Messages, like a mentions feature. However, what makes this rollout weird is the fact that some users are seeing changes in different spots in the interface. According to the report, the new Material 3 Expressive changes are present on the home screen, settings, search screen, new chat screen, and chat screen. However, some people report seeing changes on some of those screens but not others. Here at Android Headlines, we updated the app on our Vivo X Fold 3, and we can confirm that the changes are sporadic. For us, we see the changes on the home screen and chat interface.

The chat interface has a border around the chat list. It separates the chats from the elements above — profile picture, search bar, and Google logo. The color of the background will match the color scheme you have for the software.

When you tap on the search screen, you’ll see the Unread, Known, Unknown, Starred, Images, Videos, Places, and Links buttons in rounded rectangles at the top. As for the New chat screen, the search bar, Gemini button, and chat list sit in rounded rectangles with a border around each element. The Create Group button now extends across the entire screen.

It’s a similar story for the settings screen. Everything sits in its own rectangular bubble. You’ll see the same thing with the Emoji picker, Sticker picker, and “+” menu.

You should update your app if you’re a part of the beta. Since things are a bit inconsistent, there’s no telling which Material 3 Expressive changes will stay in the final build of Google Messages.
