Google Maps Glitch Turns Germany Into a Traffic Ghost Town

When it comes to navigation apps, Google Maps is typically the most trusted. Millions of people a day get directions to different locations through the search giant’s guidance. However, a mysterious Google Maps glitch caused pandemonium for German traffic during the holiday weekend.

Google Maps lets you know about road closures before you start your trip. This way, you can adjust your trip accordingly. It saves Time by eliminating last-minute detours.

However, the people of Germany had an annoying surprise when they tried to navigate to their loved ones during Ascension Day. The issue led to German roadways being devoid of traffic.

A Google Maps glitch caused chaos for holiday traffic in Germany

People hopped into their cars and embarked on lengthy trips on German roadways to meet up with their families. However, when they pulled up Google Maps, they saw a smattering of red dots. These red dots indicated road closures, and it looked like dozens upon dozens of roads closed down.

Looking at the screenshots below, you can get an idea of just how bad the situation was. It almost looked like the country was expecting some widespread natural disaster to occur.

That frustrated people enough, but what made the situation worse was the fact that it was localized to Google. Most people adjusted their trips to avoid the “closed” roads, but other people wanted a second opinion. They looked at other navigation apps such as Waze, and they found that there were no road closures on those apps. Also, when they traveled the routes, they found that the roads never actually closed.

The glitch was patched up quite fast

So, we can talk this up to a bug in the system. A Google spokesperson gave a response to the Berliner Morgenpost, but it did not explain what happened. The statement reads (machine translated from German) “The information in Google Maps comes from a variety of sources. Information such as locations, street names, boundaries, traffic data, and road networks comes from a combination of third-party providers, public sources, and user input. In general, these sources provide a strong foundation for comprehensive and up-to-date maps.”

The Google Maps glitch was patched up just a few hours after it arose, and traffic was able to resume for the rest of the holiday. However, it’s unfortunate that many people most likely had to stay home because of it.
