Google is facing another data-related class-action lawsuit

Google collects a ton of data on us. It uses that data for targeted advertising, which, based on Google’s latest financial report, is a lucrative business that brought in over $70 billion in revenue in Q4 2024 alone. However, there is a price to pay for that data, which comes in the form of lawsuits. Now, it looks like Google needs to gear up for yet another class action lawsuit over its alleged unlawful collection of data.

Google’s data lawsuits

Google has faced many data-related lawsuits over the years. In one instance, users sued the company over data collected through Google Chrome. In another, a software glitch led to a data breach in 2015. Then, in 2023, users accused Google of tricking them into consenting to 24/7 location tracking outside of Google Maps.

The latest lawsuit, Attila Csupo et al. v. Google LLC, was actually filed against Google back in 2019. It alleges that Google is siphoning information from Android devices without the user’s permission. It claims that these transfers take place in the background without notifying the user. Apparently, this even occurs when users leave their phones completely idle with all apps closed.

The lawsuit also takes issue with how these transfers take place over a cellular network. This, apparently, violates California law. The plaintiffs are asking Google to compensate them for the “value of the cellular data” it used for “its own benefit” without their permission. Basically, it sounds like the plaintiffs are unhappy that Google is leveraging its users’ cellular data without their express permission.

Lawsuit taking place this June

The plaintiffs filed the lawsuit in 2019, but the actual trial is now scheduled for June 2, 2025.

This lawsuit could be of interest to anyone living in the state of California and using an Android device. It seems that the Class is defined as “all natural persons who, while residing in the State of California, have used a mobile phone running a Google-licensed version of the Android operating system with a cellular data plan from August 9, 2016, to the present.”

If, for whatever reason, you fall in the Class but don’t want to be part of it, you can exclude yourself by going to the Settlement website and submitting your withdrawal. Google hasn’t commented on the lawsuit yet. However, there is still time for the company to respond. Alternatively, Google may offer up some kind of settlement to avoid a potentially long, drawn-out court battle.
