Google discontinues Nest Protect smart smoke alarm & Yale lock

Google has discontinued the 2nd-gen Nest Protect smart smoke detector. The search titan has posted on the Google Nest Community Blog that it is no longer producing new units of the Nest Protect. Furthermore, the company has also stopped manufacturing the Nest x Yale smart door lock.

Google has discontinued the decade-old Nest Protect smoke detector; 3rd-party devices are coming

Google introduced the first-gen Nest Protect smart home accessory in 2013. The company released the second-gen model in 2015, which it has just discontinued. If you like Google’s smart home ecosystem, then don’t worry because some 3rd-party alternatives are on the way. Google has partnered with the home safety firm First Alert to launch the First Alert Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm.

First Alert’s smart smoke alarms offer several of the same features found on the Nest Protect

The new smoke alarm alternatives will work with the First Alert and Google Home apps, but not with any other smart home platforms. First Alert’s new Smart Smoke & CO Alarms cost $129.99 and will be available in hardwired or battery-powered models later this year. You can already pre-order these devices in the US and Canada.

First Alert’s latest smart smoke alarms offer a handful of the same features found on the Google Nest Protect. They have automatic safety checkups and a “Heads-up Early Warning”, which sends voice and app alerts before an alarm triggers. You can silence accidental alarms from both the First Alert and Google Home apps. The new alarms also utilize First Alert’s Precision Detection, which is an advanced sensing technology that uses photoelectric sensing.

Google will continue supporting the existing Nest Protect units

Google said that the Nest Protect will continue to sell while supplies last. It’s worth mentioning that there’s no change to the company’s support policy for existing Nest Protect devices. They will continue to work as always through their expiration dates. Furthermore, the company will continue to provide software and security updates for the existing units.

While Google hasn’t officially announced it yet, The Verge reports that the company has also stopped making new units of the Nest x Yale smart door lock. The Yale Smart Lock with Matter will succeed the previous offering. Designed to complement the Nest Doorbells, the new smart lock will launch in summer 2025.
