On Monday, the Supreme Court of India reportedly issued a notice to Netflix, Amazon Prime, Ullu, ALTT, and even social media platforms and YouTube, asking them to initiate appropriate steps to prohibit the streaming of obscene content. The Government of India will have to ensure that the SC directive is implemented.
The top court’s intervention came about after a Public Interest Litigation. Recently, a survey stated that half the OTT shows on many platforms are unsuitable to be watched with one’s family. Parents in India have been thoroughly miffed with the liberal depiction of sex.
Already, several OTT shows have censored themselves. In the wake of the latest SC intervention, it is likely that sex scenes and extreme language will be further censored.
Social media will continue to be too hard to be regulated. On YouTube, thousands of videos get made every day. “Movie censorship is manual today. It is very difficult for manual intervention to scale to this insanely high internet or digital content creation model. We can ask for platforms to be more transparent on the user-generated feedback,” comments Halley Kalyan, a social media user. Â
